Kevin Roche, Architect Who Melded Bold With Elegant, Dies at 96 (NYT Repost)

Whether you know him by name or his buildings, architect Kevin Roche was a giant in his field. He trained under famed architect Eero Saarinen (who designed the TWA Terminal at JFK). Roche’s New York works included the Ford Fundation headquarters in Midtown Manhattan, finished in 1967, and the Metropolitan Musuem of Art’s glass pavilion enclosing the Temple of Dendur completed in 1979.

First Department Oral Argument

Yesterday afternoon I had the privilege and opportunity to participate in oral argument before a five Justice panel in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York in Manhattan. I represented plaintiffs-appellants who appealed a trial court justice decision denying summary judgment. The case involves UCC claims against a customer’s bank for improper payment of two dual party checks and a missing endorsement shortened notice provision in the bank’s agreement with its customer which we argued was commercially unreasonable and void against public policy. It was a great experience, both interacting with the Justices during my oral argument and listening to over a dozen oral arguments by attorneys handling other appeals which the Justices heard before ours!

The Bill Coming Due for Airlines (WSJ Repost)

US Airports plan to spend $100 billion over the next five years to refurbish old terminals and expanding capacity. Is the extra expense worth it to modernize and improve service?

According to FactSet, the four largest such self-storage owners have each outpaced the S&P 500 on a total-return basis over the last decade. What will the future hold for these investments?

Las Vegas Housing Weakness Signals the Slowdown Is Spreading . (WSJ Repost)

The percentage of house listings with price cuts in Las Vegas has more than doubled since a year ago; since October 2018 the share of such listings in Las Vegas has been higher then for the U.S. market. Is this evidence of a broader national slowdown in housing? Or a blip on the radar before markets rebound during the usually busier spring selling season?
